God is Good

In her devotional, “The Transforming Power of a Grateful Heart”, Roxanne Parks writes: “Ponder these thoughts: God is completely good. God is constantly good. God is unchangeably good. God will never not be good. God could never be less than good. Everything our God does is good. God gives you a peace that passes understanding. God gives you the Holy Spirit to convict, strengthen, encourage. God gives you His Word as a guide. God gives you health to bless you. God gives you friends to love you. God gives you life to enjoy. God has never stopped being good; we have just stopped being grateful.”

Most Christians want to believe that they are grateful for all that the Lord has done and is doing for them. But … are they really? Are there times when they take His goodness for granted? Are they sometimes ungrateful for His many blessings toward them? Do they act as though they have earned His blessings because they are trying to live right? How often do they forget to say “thank You”? Jerry Bridges said, “The very first temptation in the history of mankind was the temptation to be discontent ... that is exactly what discontentment is – a questioning of the goodness of God.” Do they continually give Him thanks from a grateful heart? Or do they find themselves taking on the ungrateful attitudes of those around them?

The Lord is a mighty good God! Jehovah, Elohim, El Shaddai, Father God is better than good. To say that God is good doesn’t begin to quantify all that He is and all that He does. So, the next time you forget to thank Him for waking you up, stop and remind yourself that God is good! When she finds herself feeling prideful and taking credit for something that she did, she should stop and she should remind herself that God is good! When He saves her from that near-miss incident, she should stop and remind herself that God is good! When she gets that unexpected blessing that she knows she doesn’t deserve, she should stop and remind herself that God is good!

God is good because that is who He is. It is His nature to be good and to do good. Christians can declare that God is good not only because of what He does, but because He does it in spite of their ignorance/arrogance/forgetfulness/ungratefulness. He is good because no matter how undeserving they are, He continues to bless them every day of their lives. “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,” (Psalm 23:6 NIV). God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good!

13: I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

14: Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.

Psalm 27 (NIV)

1: Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His love endures forever.

8: Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for mankind!

Psalm 107 (NIV)

“The goodness of God is infinitely more wonderful than we will ever be able to comprehend.”
