THE WISDOM OF JESUS

Mark 6:1 – 6 (NLT)

LESSON FOCUS: Even if people can’t see you for who you have become, God knows what is in your heart. Do we understand that it is more important to please Him than to please others?

Offended (v. 3) skandalizo (Greek) – Trip up; cause to stumble, or to cause displeasure
Unbelief (v. 6) apistis (Greek) – Faithlessness, disbelief, unfaithfulness, or disobedience

AIM FOR CHANGE

By the end of this lesson, we will:
IDENTIFY the reason or reasons the people in Nazareth could not accept the wisdom of Jesus,
REPENT of the occasions when Jesus’ words made us feel offended instead of accepting them as wisdom, and COMMIT to accepting the words of Jesus even when they challenge us.

When did someone you know display surprising insights and knowledge?

 What was the reaction of others?
 Was anyone surprised?
 Did anyone express disbelief or reject the person?
 What was your personal response? Why?

WHAT THE WORD SAYS:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
— Proverbs 1 (NKJV) 7:

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.
— Proverbs 3 (NKJV) 7
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.
— Proverbs 4 (NKJV) 7

LIVING IT OUT

  1. Ask God to give you fresh eyes as you read.

  2. Consider a recent message, either one received while reading God’s word, or hearing it, in which you have been offended.

  3. Consider why you were offended and pray.
