Developing Your Teens Voice

Ephesians 2:10 states that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Throughout American history and world history, for that matter, society has devalued those born with darker skin. In 1926, Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, and journalist created Negro History Week, the second week of February, to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of African Americans in America. In 1970, Kent State University black educators and students expanded it to Black History Month and in 1976, President Gerald Ford recognized it as a month to be celebrated.

As we celebrate the contributions of black people around the world this month, it’s important to recognize that we are raising the next generation of influencers. God has uniquely designed your child with purpose, but we must cultivate their ability to use their voices. According to an article written in the Smithsonian Magazine about how to boost and activate teen voices, the authors listed the following:

  • Create a community where they feel safe to express themselves

  • Create space for them to have difficult conversations around current events.

  • Expose them to teen histories and current teens that are making a difference, so they are empowered to do the same.

Eastern Star Church IGNiTE Teen Ministry provides an environment where all these components can happen. Ensuring that your child participates in the current programming will increase their ability to impact their families, community, and world for God.

  2. Teen Talk (Monday nights at 7:30 pm via Zoom. Registration is required.) – Teens get to share their thoughts on current issues.

  3. Teen Bible Study (Wednesday nights LIVE on ESC IGNiTE Instagram page at 8 pm) – Teens interact with God’s Word together.

  4. Virtual Teen Church (1st & 3rd Sundays on ESC IGNiTE Teen YouTube channel) – Teens provide content and ideas on these videos.

Teens are bombarded with opportunities to develop and learn. Do not minimize their need for biblical instruction. Being an active part of teen ministry allows them to develop their voices and more importantly develop their understanding of God’s truth. You’re getting two for one, here! Commit to requiring their participation in one or all these opportunities.

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6: 6-7, NIV
