9 Ways to Celebrate Mom in Quarantine
With COVID-19 disrupting our day-to-day lives in every way imaginable, it may be hard to resist seeking comfort in our mothers’ arms. Especially on Mother’s Day!
If you have the good fortune of living with your mother, celebrating Mother’s Day may be a bit easier. You may be able to get that hug and kiss from Mom.
This year, we are faced with the realization that the best — and safest — gift many of us can give Mom is social distancing during this pandemic which, unfortunately, is putting seniors at high risk for health complications.
No matter your situation, the Word says, in Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and your mother.” We compiled a list of 9 ideas to inspire you to show your love to your mother, aunts, grandmothers and the other mother figures in your life during this Mother’s Day.
1. Make plans to worship together. Start your Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10, by worshipping together — no matter where you are. If your church offers livestreaming — either on Facebook or YouTube, invite your mother to join you. For example, Eastern Star Church hosts services at 9:15 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. every Sunday. You can view it together on Facebook Live, YouTube or by clicking on “Watch Live” on the website at your preferred time. Create the experience as if you’re in service together. You can engage with one another while enjoying the music and the preached Word.
2. Phone call. Nothing beats a good old phone call to let Mom know you’re thinking of her on this special day. Make it a thoughtful conversation. Let her know how much she means to you.
Before you call, take time to think of a few special memories that you shared with her. For example, if she inspired you to be more Godly, share the ways that she had an influence in your life.
3. Video call. If your mother, grandmother, aunt or other mother figure hasn’t figured out the wonders of technology, ease her into the virtual experience with a tutorial on user-friendly platforms like Google Duo. Then have a conversation face-to-face. You can make it a celebration by inviting other family members to join in on the call.
4. Send or drop off a care package. In addition to the flowers, candles and cards that bring a smile to Mom’s face, think about filling your Mother’s Day care package with some COVID-19 essentials like face masks, scented hand soap and disinfectant. The gift of health is invaluable at this critical time.
5. Virtual brunch, lunch or dinner. Share a meal with Mom virtually. Arrange to have a meal delivered to her house from her favorite restaurant. Schedule a meal delivery to your home and then contact her via Zoom, Google Duo or Apple’s Facetime.
6. Virtual movie date. Schedule a time to watch a favorite movie with Mom. If she doesn’t have Netflix or Hulu, consider buying her a subscription as a gift. No matter which movie you choose, start it at the same time and share laughs and tears together while talking and viewing.
7. Virtual cooking class. Let Mom teach you one of her signature recipes via FaceTime or a telephone call. As you cook or bake, ask her to talk about the special memories she had when preparing and serving the dish to your family.
8. Mother’s Day parade. Drive past Mom’s house with your siblings or other loved ones in parade style. If you want to get ambitious, decorate your vehicles with flowers and other Mother’s Day symbols. You also can decorate posters that you can hold up when you reach her home.
9. A heartfelt poem. Tap into your creativity by writing a poem about what your mother means to you. Give her a call and recite it. Make it even more special by framing it and sending it to her.
Whatever you decide to do to celebrate the mothers in your life, make it meaningful and heartfelt. This unusual period in our nation’s history reminds us of what is truly important. Have a blessed Mother’s Day celebration!
