Come and See
Scripture:
8: Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!
9: Fear the Lord, you His godly people, for those who fear Him will have all they need.
10: Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry, but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing.
Psalm 34 (NLT)
There are some things which just shout at people from the pages of Scripture. Undoubtedly, that was God’s plan – to get their attention, to highlight and shine a spotlight on His Word in such a way that the message cannot be missed. Themes are emphasized, ideas are restated over and over again. He wants all people to get it! When God says a thing twice, it should get people’s attention; but when He says it three times, it’s time to take action.
One such powerful phrase found in Scripture is “come and see”. It’s so often repeated that it literally screams from the pages of the Bible. Three little words, but each time they are read, they come with life-changing power.
“Come and see the works of God; He is awesome in His doing toward the sons of men.” (Psalm 66:5 NKJV)
“Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” (John 4:29 NKJV)
He (Jesus) said to them, “Come and see.” (John 1:39 NKJV)
And Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” (John 1:46 NKJV)
He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. (Matthew 28:6 NKJV)
Each time this phrase is used in these verses, it is to confirm something (about Jesus) which has been said or provide a witness to something (about Jesus) about which people have questions or doubts. It’s like they are saying, “If you don’t believe me, come and see for yourself”. This becomes especially real in the book of Revelation, where everyone is invited to “Come and see” the reality of what life will be like for those who reject Christ’s offer of salvation.
If in a place where witnessing to people who are not convicted, invite them to “Come and see”. God is good – “Come and see”. The Lord God is merciful – “Come and see”. Look at what He has done in my life – “Come and see”. God loves you – “Come and see”. You cannot beat God giving – “Come and see”. Anything, everything, all things about the amazing God can be confirmed if people would only “Come and see”. Pray for God to open their hearts, then invite them to “Come and see”!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for opening hearts and minds to respond to Your invitation to “Come and see”. You have shown Your glory in so many amazing ways. For those who said “yes”, You saved them, redeeming them from death and destruction. Thank You. You provide for them daily. Thank You. You are their protection and their ever-present help. Thank You. Now, please give them the confidence to invite others to “Come and see” You for themselves, so that they, too, can know that You are the true and living God who came into the world to save them from sin and death. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflection:
“Real security can only be found in that which can never be taken from you – your relationship with God.”
